The mysticism and secret of shark liver oil have been kept as a miraculous folk medicine in the Scandinavian and the Far East countries up until recently. Even in the twelfth century the Japanese great generals, Shoguns, and their warriors used shark liver oil on a daily basis as a magic elixir for greater strength, vitality, masculinity, long life. As the privilege of the rich shark liver oil was also used as anti-aging solution, for preserving nice complexion and freshness, for enhancing sexual vitality and instinct, as a lubricant before sexual intercourse. The standard analytical composition of shark liver oil contains 11 ingredients and many institutions and scientists worldwide are trying to give tangible proof in favor of any of them to show its miraculous effect on people's health.

Fe IRON

It is important for life maintenance, necessary for HEMOGLOBIN production (red blood cell bodies) and some ensims. Only 8% of the total iron intake is absorbed by blood. Women lose twice the amount of iron in a month than men do. Fe is necessary for normal metabolism of vitamine B, it supports growth and resistance to diseases, it prevents fatigue, cures anemia and provides with nice complexion…

Cu COPPER

It is necessary for the transformation of iron into hemoglobin…

Zn ZINC

It is important for protein synthesis. It regulates the ability of muscle contractions, supports the production of insuline for the normal prostate gland function and it is important for the development of all the reproduction organs. New research has shown that it is benefitial for brain function and treating schizophrenia patients. It shorthens the healing period of external and internal wounds, removes white spots on nails, aids in the healing of the sense of taste loss, sterility, acts as preventive in possible prostate gland problems, growth and clarity of the mind problems. It reduces cholesterol layers, helps with mental disorders…

TRYGLICERIDES

As far as shark liver oil is concerned, there are positive fatty subtances that enter bloodstream. They are called lipoproteins. Lipotrops increase the production of lecithin in the liver as well, which makes cholesterol soluble, it detixicates the liver and incresesrestistance to diseases helping the thymus gland carry out its function…

OMEGA 3 (FREE FATTY ACID)

Shark liver oil contains omega 3 fatty acids that effectively act against insomnia, stress, depression. It acts as a preventive for cadriovascular diseases. Science has proved that peoples in the Far East countries, Iceland and Greenland suffer from cancer, heart and blood vessel diseases much less than peoples in Europe or America. Prostanglandin are, among other, important circulation regulators of the immune sysytem, of the fat metabolism and many other. They decrease the high level of cholesterol and triglycerides, prevent the blood platelets from being sticked together, and the creation of clots, which decreases the risk of blocking blood vessels and heart attack. Omega 3 fatty acid is a substance that i used in the prevention from lung cancer, psoriasis, chronic inflammations (reumatism), as an immune system stimulator, multiple sclerosis. Beyond this, unsaturated fatty acids Omega 3 protect skin and make it more beautiful…

NATURAL VITAMIN A

Vitamin A had been produced in its natural form by extraction form shark liver oil till 1950s when the synthetic vitamin A was first produced in Switzerland. Vitamin A is important for fighting night blindness, poor sight. It creates resistance to respiratory organs infections, shortens the ilness period, keeps the state of health of the external layers of our tissues and organs, eliminates aging spots, enhances growth, strengthenes bones and keeps teeth, gums, hair and skin healthy; helps fight spots, boils…

NATURAL VITAMIN D

Vitamin D is absorbed by the body via sun-rays causing the oil on our skin to produce this vitamin. When the skin gets tanned by the sun, the vitamin D production ceases. Vitamin D makes use of calcium and phosphorus which are necessary for strong bones and teeth. It aids in conjuctivitis treatments and vitamin A assimilation…

NATURAL VITAMIN E

It is found in liver, fatty tissues, heart, muscles, testicles, uterus, blood, adrenal glands and pituitary gland. It slows down the cell aging process which preserves youthful look. It supplies oxigen to the cells and therefore keeps the body in good condition, protects lungs from polution with the assistance of vitamin A. It prevents the creation of bloob clots by dissolving them in the blood; it alleivates fatigue, helps internal and external body scars fade away, speeds up the healing of wounds and burns; acts as diuretic and lowers bloob pressure; also acts as a prevention from miscarriage and cramps in legs. Vitamin E is essential for treating sterility and for enhancing sexual vitality…

THE SECRET OF SHARK LIVER OIL: ALKYLGLYCEROL

“Alkylglycerol, or AKG, is a family of compounds that play a vital part in the production and stimulation of white blood cells. It is found in freshwater fish, cows, sheep, and mother's milk- AKGs are one of the active substances that give breast-fed babies crucial protection against infection until the infants' own immune systems are fully developed. But it is in the liver of the deepwater shark that AKGs are found in greater concentration than any other place on earth.
For centuries, AKG-rich shark liver oil has been used as a home remedy by peoples around the world. Now, (in this book), four eminent doctors bring together the scientific research that proves its effectiveness.
From healing wounds and boosting energy to preventing infection and helping cancer patients live longer, shark liver oil is the most amazing immune enhancer ever discovered.”
(“Shark Liver Oil”, the very beginning)

“AKGs in the milk of any mother in any species are the active substances which provide infants with natural protection and immunity against infection until the infant's own immune system is fully developed. The importance of breast milk in protecting infants from infection is recognized the world over. In addition, the process of breastfeeding seems to enhance the bonding process between mother and child, increase the IQ and school performance of the child at a later date, and perhaps even reduce the risk of certain malignancies and, possibly, juvenile diabetes. Some experts even believe that the feeding of breast milk to infants lowers the risk of their developing breast cancer as adults. In short, few would dispute the antiviral and other long-term health benefits of AKG-rich breast milk.”
(Shark Liver Oil”, p 8)

“The first reported discovery of AKGs was made in 1922 by two Japanese researcher, M. Tsujimoto and Y. Toyama, from sharks caught in the deep unpolluted waters of New Zealand. Neither, it seems, recognized what a powerful substance he had come upon.
Thirty years later, in 1952, a young Swedish doctor named Astrid Brohult began to give the bone-marrow scrapings from calves to children hospitalized with leukemia. Dr. Brohult reasoned that since white blood cells are produced in bone marrow, perhaps an extract of marrow would help in cases of abnormal white blood cell production. Wrapping the bone-marrow scrapings in pieces of chocolate, she distributed the “treats” to her young patients.

Dr Brohult and her nurses were astouned by what they found. At first, the results of increased energy and the normalization of white blood cell counts were uneven. Nevertheless, the presence of any positive results was incredible. Still, Dr. Brohult had no idea what substance in the bone-marrow scrapings had actually stimulated the normal white blood cell production. Dr. Brohult asked her husband, Dr, Sven Brohult, a professor of chemistry, to form a team to analyze the calves' bone marrow.
It was not until 1962 that Dr. Sven Brohult was able to identify and establish the efficacy of AKGs within the calves' bone marrow. At that time, the Doctors Brohult excitedly brought their results to the attention of a Swedish pharmaceutical company. The Doctors Brohult and the pharmaceutical company determined that the best-known source of AKGs in the Atlantic Ocean was the liver of the Greenland Shark. And it was only then that the Doctors Brohult realized that these AKGs had to be the same active ingredients which had caused Scandinavian fishermen to use shark liver oil as a general home remedy and preventative for hundreds of years. Roughly concurrent with the Brohults' studies, Swedish researcher Dr. Bo Hallgren was making a name for himself as one of the first scientists to discover and isolate what are called methoxy-substituted AKGs in shark liver oil. In a series of scientific papers written with coworkers Drs. Gunnel Stallberg and Bernt Boeryd, Hallgren, who worked principally with animal subjects, reported that the AKGs did have an inhibitory effect upon the growth of tumor cells in the laboratory (in vitro) and also were capable of limiting and even arresting the growth and spread of experimental tumors planted in mice (in vivo).
More than 70 years of research, in New Zealand, Japan, and Europe, have yielded remarkable results. For example, scientists have found that giving cancer patients small dosages of AKGs before, during, and after radiation treatment reduces the sharp and dangerous drop in white blood cells (leukopenia) which is a common side effect of the treatment. AKGs are also known to reduce the drop in white blood cells count that accompanies chemotherapy. Given that white blood cells play a key role in preventing infection and promoting healing in humans, these results are of great importance.
A powerful illustration of the effect of AKGs on people exposed to radiation was noted by Dr. Brohult and Dr. Holmberg when AKGs were administered to a Stockholm nurse known, for the purposes of the study, as Radiation Nurse. Radiation Nurse had been accidentally exposed to radium radiation at the end of 1951, and as a result, her leukocyte, or white blood cell count, dropped from her normal 4500 per microliter to a dangerously low 2000 per microliter, and remained at that low level for almost one year. During this time, she was extremely prone to infections. However, upon the intake of AKGs during late 1953 and four times during the first half of 1954, her bone marrow function was normalized. When observed nine years later, in 1963, her white blood cell count was still stable. According to Dr. Joelsson, it is important to note that AKGs normalize the bone-marrow function. They do not overstimulate. Also important for radiation patients is the fact that AKGs have been shown to stimulate production of blood platelets, necessary for the clotting of blood and the cessation of bleeding, during the radiation treatment.
Finally, AKGs also have been shown to elevate the production of types of white blood cells, called macrophages, which consume yeast and viruses. This result makes AKGs effective as general strengtheners of the immune system.
Perhaps most exciting is the fact that AKGs have been shown to cause no significant side effects. (The only side effects have been noted in shark liver oil rich in AKGs are, in some cases: belching; a rash, if allergic to shark liver protein; and diarrhea, if too much taken.) In fact, the human body is constantly producing AKGs naturally. AKGs are present naturally in human bone marrow, the liver and spleen, and in human breast milk. The amount of AKGs found naturally in shark liver oil is dramatically higher than the amount found in the human body.”

FOREWORD

By Neil Solomon, M.D., Ph.D. and Richard Passwater, Ph.D.

It is rare for physicians and medical researchers to come across a substance as promising as shark liver oil and its primary active ingredient, Alkylglycerols (AKGs). Our combined years of medical and graduate schooling, as well as our long experience with patients and research, have bread within us a very healthy skepticism. Before giving credence to any supposed “wonder” drug or food supplement, we look for several key elements: double-blind research studies with a large number of patients; conducted independently by reputable scientists and researchers at academic institutions from all parts of the world; and results having statistical significance. The research on shark liver oil and Alkylglycerol (AKG) is not yet completed. However, we do have statistical data gathered by respected scientists, as well as a compelling collection of field reports gathered by the users of shark liver oil, their families and friends, and the health professionals who have witnessed the remarkable results in their patients- and their own families. What these reports show is that shark liver oil, taken as a food supplement, exhibits a remarkable ability to help strengthen the human immune system.
Certainly, additional studies must be conducted. In medical science, scientific proof is hard to come by. Another twenty years might pass before the complete medical science efficacy of shark liver oil is proved. However, because the use of shark liver oil produces no significant negative side effects, we are reluctant to wait twenty years before bringing shark liver oil to the attention of the public.
The reality is that shark liver oil, used in various cultures for years as a “folk” medicine and increasingly available through network marketing and health food stores without a prescription, just might be a medical breakthrough, one which could bring it widespread healing experiences.

“Shark Liver Oil: Nature's Amazing Healer is based on both published and unpublished scientific studies relative to a special form of shark liver oil abundant with Alkylglycerols (AKGs). Some of this information may not conform to peer review standards; therefore, the results may not be considered scientifically conclusive. However, many of the studies discussed here have been presented at respected scientific conferences around the world and published in scientific journals and other publications. As is common with scientific studies that present information inconsistent with the prevailing beliefs of conventional science, some of the studies have generated, and no doubt will continue to generate, controversy.
There are various standards by which information is judged by both science and government agencies. In some cases, there is no established standard. As a result, one can find many contradictions and inconsistencies within both scientific conclusions and government policy- as well as within the marketplace.
Shark liver oil is a natural substance- not a medicinal drug but a food supplement- possessing the natural component of Alkylglycerols (AKGs), found also, for example, in human breast milk. It is our contention that the final decision as to its value will be positively determined by public consensus. I believe the information contained in this book to be valid and worthy of introduction to all who seek a better life through improved health.”

(“Shark Liver Oil”, Foreword)

“From the very beginning of my research with Dr. Astrid Brohult and her family in the early 1950s, we concentrated our work on Alkylglycerols or AKGs (then called alkoxyglycerols). Dr. Astrid Brohult was seeking an immune-system stimulator and strengthener, a substance which would have the most positive impact on the human immune system, a substance which would offer the promise of help for many diseases that had wreaked havoc on mankind for centuries. Alkylglycerols are such a substance.”
(“Shark Liver Oil”, p xiv)

There are many types of antioxidants. Some of the most common are: vitamins A,C and E; betacarotene; selenium; zinc, reduced glutathione; proanthocyanidins; anthocyanidins; and lipoic acid. All have long been used in varying dosages to eliminate oxidizing free radicals, which are produced from air and water pollution, smog, ozone, insecticides, normal human metabolism, strenuous exercise, and much else. Free radicals, which attack cells of the body and cause over sixty chronic illnesses, are a major factor in aging. The traditional antioxidants listed above are most effective in scavenging free radicals outside of cells. Very few of them are able to penetrate the cell membrane.
According to Dr. Ingemar Joelsson, the AKGs found in the shark liver oil of the Greenland Shark have demonstrated a singularity in this respect. He believes that as antioxidants, these AKGs are uniquely effective in attacking and eliminating those free radicals which have penetrated cell membranes and tissues, where they are most dangerous. Once inside, they are likely to cause cellular structural damage and to leave the cells weakened and vulnerable to invading germs, including the AIDS virus. When the DNA inside the cell is damaged by these free radicals, cancer can result.”

Shark liver oil as a food supplement can be beneficial to all, whether taken for general health purposes or to impact on a particular immunodeficiency. Its wonders are waiting for you to discover them.

“ADULTS: Take one or two 500 mg capsules three times a day, before breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with eight ounces of fluid. Continue for one month for each decade of age (e.g. two months for a twenty-year-old, six months for a sixty-year-old) or until you see the desired improvement. Then, for maintenance, take one capsule, once a day before breakfast, or twice a day, before breakfast and dinner. CHILDREN UP TO 16: Take one 500 mg capsule twice a day for three months, or until you see the desired improvement. For maintenance, take one capsule every morning. Capsules may be opened and the contents poured on cereal, applesauce, etc., for children too young to swallow pills.
Before taking any supplements, of course, check with your health-care professional.”

SQUALAMINE

“Squalamine is a sterol-spermidine conjugate present in the shark liver and extractable, to some extent, with the oil. As a broad-spectrum antimicrobial, squalamine is effective against Candida yeast, escherichia coli, staphylococcus, streptococcus, pseudomonas, proteus and serratia bacteria, among other bacteria, both gram-positive and gram-negative, and fungi.”
(“Shark Liver Oil”, p138)

This broad-spectrum antibiotic and antifungal has particular benefit to immuno-compromised persons such as AIDS and cancer patients.

“Squalamine is currently being investigated by Johns Hopkins School of Medicine researchers, Dr Henry Brem, Allen Sills, Mark Donowitz and their collaborators for its tumor destroying ability. Squalamine destroyed the tumor spreading ability in rabbits by surpressing the growth of new blood vessels needed to support the growth of tumors. Squalamine halted the growth of brain tumors in rats and prolonged the lives of the laboratory animals.”
(John Maras)

“Squalamine apparently exerts its effect via a receptor-based inhibition of a membrane protein which controls cellular activity in capilary -forming cells.”
(“Shark Liver Oil”, p 138)

“At the April 30,1996 annual meeting of the American Association of Neurological surgeons in Minneapolis, Dr. Brem commented, “Our findings present evidence that squalamine may work against brain cancer.” Preliminary studies with certain brain cancer cells (glioma) have been encouraging, and the group plans clinical studies by the second half of 1997.”
(John Maras)

“Certain types of shark liver oil can also contain traces of antibiotic peptides called magainins, and a group of compounds that are glycerol ether lipids. The glycerol ether lipids have chemical structures that feature the basic glycerol skeleton with an ether linkage to a fatty acid group in one of the four “arms”. Their chemical structured are generally described as CH2OHCHOHCH2OR, where R is a long-chain aliphatic radical. This family of compounds is also referred to as Alkylglycerols as well as by several other names, including AKGs.”
(“Shark Liver Oil”, p 139)

“Michael Zasloff, M.D., Ph.D., and currently executive vice president of Magainin Pharmaceuticals Inc., discovered the substance called squalamine. Squalamine was first found as a component of the sharks stomach and other tissues. Later studies showed that the highest amount of squalamine is located in the shark's liver. Squalamine has been shown to have a definite effect, similar to that of an antibiotic, on various strains of bacteria.”
(“Shark Liver Oil”, p 39)
Dr. John Maras, a well-known oncologist from the USA, has very encouraging results about various cancer treatments.

“Shark liver oil has gained a lot of popularity over the last 4 years since the finding of a compound called squalamine in the oil which addresses the angiogenesis process. Angiogenesis is the process of blood vessels formation in the body that tumors utilize to grow/progress. Researchers at Johns Hopkins and Mangainin Pharmaceuticals found that squalamine inhibited the ability of blood vessels to migrate into the tumors thus cutting off the tumor's ability to connect with the bloodstream.

Shark liver oil contains numerous components that are beneficial for various disease states but contains two that are very specific for their role in cancer. These are squalamine and alkylglycerols both of which are not present in cod liver oil. Squalamine acts against the process of angiogenesis- a critical process needed by all malignant cells whereby blood vessels migrate into the tumor and acts as its “lifeline”. Without blood vessels formation into the tumor -it simply cant thrive. There is direst correlation to the rate of angiogenesis and blood formation to the rate of tumor growth. The greater the number of blood vessels forming into the mass the larger and more progressive it becomes.”

SQUALENE-TREASURE OF THE DEEP

Squalene “The answer to good health is prevention by anticipation and not by reaction. This means avoiding illness through proper diet including the right use of supplements, a clean environment, exercise and sleep. It means taking in substances that will nourish our body cells and enhance our health.
(page 2)

“Japan has one or the world's lowest incidences of coronary heart disease and cancer cases compared to industrialized Western societies. This is true. Although this book will feature and discuss one of Japan's secrets to good health, let me say at the onset that no one substance or “magic pill” can bring about health alone. Great health is achieved through a healthy lifestyle. This lifestyle must include a proper diet, a healthy environment, regular and consistent exercise and the rest brought about by a good night's sleep. There is just not substitute foe these. Unfortunately, even in Japan, these essentials are deteriorating. The industrial lifestyle filled with stress, pollution and vices such as smoking, drinking and late stay are of significance is the “modernization” of the practice of the medical profession. Already, Japan is following this trend in medical health care where billions are spent in treating patients who are already ill and only a small percent is spent for preventive applications. In earlier years, Japan (like China and most of Asia) was at the forefront of preventive treatments. The east has always believed that the answer to good health is “prevention by application and not by reaction.” […]
This book has been written for the layman. My late father, Dr. Ryosuke Yokota, and his colleagues in the field of medicine searched high and low for natural substances that can help improve the health of our countrymen. They found one such substance – Squalene. This substance is of tremendous value to us, yet unlike most other substances, has no toxic effect. A real Treasure of the Deep!” (pages 3-4)

“The secret of deep-sea shark liver extract has been woven in legends carried for centuries in Japan. It has been noted in the ancient book on typical Chinese remedies written as far back as the Ming Dynasty. Now, modern research has confirmed the deep-sea shark liver oil's beneficial effects on health.”
(page 5)

“Dr. Tsujimoto and the others who are credited with the scientific discovery of squalene were primarily interested in the industrial benefits of the hydrocarbon.

It was Doctor Keijiro Kogami who began espousing the health-giving benefits of squalene. Graduated in 1918 from the Tokyo Imperial University, college of Medicine, Dr. Kogamy spent a lifetime of research at the Nakano National Tuberculosis Treatment Center, at the Tokyo Imperial University. In 1930, Doctor Kogami turned his attention to squalene and began biochemical experiments and research. Five years later, around 1935, he began injecting squalene into tuberculosis patients. This treatment made sense since squalene is a natural microbicide, although not as potent as antibiotics. Dr. Kogami conducted the most extensive research and tests on squalene. Dr. Kogami's success resulted in the establishment of his own hospital in Tokyo, the Kogami Hospital at Yotsua.
Dr. Kogami is considered a pioneer in the practical application of squalene throughout Japan and the world, having conducted the earliest and most extensive tests on squalene for medical health applications. Among the doctor's notable studies and findings were extensive tests proving that squalene is completely harmless to the cells of the human body. He was also the first to signify and prove its dietary value. More importantly, his laboratory experiments showed squalene's ability to hinder the growth of the tubercle bacillus. This was the first experiment that proved squalene's inherent action as a powerful natural and safe bactericide, as will be discussed more thoroughly in chapter three. Our tests conducted by Dr. Kogami included tests on skin diseases, diabetes and lung gangrene. Researchers conducted on the sebum cutaneum (secreted skin oil and fat) showed squalene as a vital ingredient. This led the people at Kogami to study the various uses of squalene for the skin. It must be noted, however, that since tuberculosis was raging its ugly head all over Japan, Dr. Kogami's focus was primarily on TB, disregarding the more appropriate use of squalene as a dietary supplement.”
(pages 10-11)

“Squalene is not a magic ill that will solve all your health problems. Many good products like squalene have ended up being considered as “quack” remedies because their benefits and features have been overstated. Others tout them as “miracle cures.” One of the purposes of this book is to present the complete truth about squalene to dispel overstated claims. As I have mentioned before, great health is achieved through a healthy diet, reduced exposure to “free radicals”, a stress-free lifestyle and adequate exercise. Squalene as a supplement is added to this regimen. This is to say that a person who ingests hundreds of squalene capsules will sill not experience great health if the other requirements are not met. However, consider the benefits of squalene: sufficient supply of pure oxygen to your cells, prevention of cell mutation, increased immunity, purifying and anti-aging action. These are valuable reasons to regularly take this God-given natural substance. All it takes is one to three capsules as a dietary supplement.”
(pages 36-37)

“First of all, when using squalene for the face apply to the neck area first to test for the reason that you may be sensitive to it. However, generally, squalene is safe to use and you should not have any problem using it for the other parts of your body. Secondly, be sure your hands and skin are properly cleaned before attempting to apply squalene, bearing in mind that it is readily absorbed by the skin cells. This means that any harmful substance in your hands or environment will be absorbed just as quickly if you do not maintain a level of cleanliness. Thirdly, use only squalene contained in soft gelatine capsules. This ensures that the squalene has not been exposed to the elements, prior to your applying it to your skin.”
(page 45)

“Baby skin is very sensitive. Even ordinary wet diapers can trigger rashes on babies. Countless testimonies have been received on squalene being effective as a baby oil. The reason squalene is better than traditional oil is because of its osmotic feature. Moreover, squalene has an inherent germicidal action that is perfect for protecting baby skin. Being a natural bactericide, it does not kill all the bacteria on the skin. It is important to realize that while there are harmful bacteria, there are also bacteria that help protect the skin. Known as “normal bacteria flora”, they aid in fighting harmful elements that attack the skin. Using very strong bactericides in washing the skin also washes off even the good form of bacteria. If this happens, the harmful bacteria or fungus can grow more easily. This is especially important to baby skin as they have less resistance to bacterial infection.” (page 96)

“Be sure you apply everything immediately but if there's more of squalene left, don't use it on your skin, you can drink it.” (page 45)

“If you have a high level of cholesterol in your blood, my advice to you is – DO NOT WORRY! I do not intend to diminish the concern of such a condition. It's just that worrying will not solve the problem, rather only worsen it. The fact is unless such a cholesterol profile is accompanied by other symptoms, a heart attack is certainly not inevitable. According to the data from the Farmingham study of cardiovascular risk, a man who has a similar risk profile has a 6% to 7% probability of developing coronary heart disease in the next eight years. There is no conclusive evidence that drugs that lower cholesterol levels would reduce the probability of death from heart ailment, even after levels are reduced. It is disturbing to see that many people who find out that they have high cholesterol levels react wrongly. Fear and worry cause unnecessary stress and loss of sleep. Unsure of their state of health they tend to stay away from any physical activity or exercise which is really what they need. As a result of health concern degenerates into a more serious disease.
It is important to understand that cholesterol levels vary from season to season, with levels being highest during winter. This could also be due to the kind of food eaten in winter. A diet low in saturated fat and high in fiber can help substantially reduce cholesterol. Oat bran or meal is highly recommended. Note, however, that fiber-rich foods can absorb cholesterol only in the intestines. A diet supplemented with lecithin can help lower cholesterol that has already been absorbed by the body. Aside from changing your diet, you should avid a stressful lifestyle and take up exercise. Personally I believe that the best exercise is one that can be maintained. Brisk walking for 30 to 45 minutes is both relaxing and adequate, if done three times a week. A final tip is: supplement your diet with squalene which aids in increasing your good cholesterol.”
(pages 121-122)

“All over Europe and even in America, more and more doctors are combining ancient medicine and new technology to treat all kinds of diseases from ordinary colds to complicated heart diseases.”
“Dr. Andrew Weil is a 54-year old Harvard-trained physician. He is one among a rapidly growing number of doctors who believe that the future of health management lies in combining Western techniques with ancient therapies such as herbalism and acupuncture. He says, “By uniting philosophies that have been separate for a long time, health care will be completely transformed.” Surgeons have long realized that patients suffering from the same sickness may have different symptoms and reactions. They have long realized that a patient's health is very much related to his emotions. Two patients who suffer from blood circulation blockages may have completely different symptoms. One may not show any symptom whatsoever, while the other may be hospitalized earlier with several unrelated symptoms. The difference is the level of stress each one may be susceptible to. The level of stress can cause vessel spasms which may trigger various symptoms. Once again, learned science and technology may not provide the only answers.
I believe that in the future a combination of both science and natural methods will be used to solve our problems. It is sad to find that in the area of environmental protection, the scientist and the naturalist also find themselves in opposite camps. It is as if one can solve the problem alone. Rather that cooperating they end up shooting at each other down. The scientist must realize that science was never meant to disprove nature but to validate it. The naturalist must realize that science is not the enemy but the positive partner meant to support and at times even enhance nature. I believe the future will be a cooperation. In time as science alone fails and as nature alone cannot remedy, more and more will realize the value of cooperation. I believe that as more and more people validate the truth about squalene, it will be at the forefront of this future development. An invaluable gift of the natural deep discovered, extracted and encapsulated by science.
I believe the future will have an array of products that will combine science and nature. The great philosopher Voltaire once said “Everyone should be his own physician. We ought to assist, not force the nature.” The scientist cannot dispense of nature too quickly and must realize that at some point a Universal God created all things and established a grand design of order. The naturalist must realize that science is necessary to validate this design. The future must be a cooperation. Hopefully, one that will lead to mankind's better state of health.”

COMMON QUESTIONS

  1. Q. Can I take squalene with other medicine?
    A. First, it is important to understand that squalene is a natural health food (a dietary supplement) and not medicine. There is no harm in ingesting it when taking medicine.
  2. Q. Is squalene good and safe for children, and what are its benefits to them?
    A. A prodigious amount of cellular reproduction through fission occurs in infants and children. Their brisk cellular activities require much oxygen. Thus, squalene is good for children. Squalene is completely safe for children at a dosage of one to two capsules daily as a dietary supplement.
  3. Q. Is squalene good for pregnant women?
    A. Yes. Pregnancy is most critical period when squalene is much needed. The embryo-fetus grows at an explosive rate, from one cell-reproducing fission to three kilos or more in nine months. Pregnant women play a vital role in supporting this cellular activity which is most important before a baby is born.
  4. Q. Can squalene take the place of vitamins?
    A. No. Squalene and vitamins are substances whose chemical structures and functions completely differ. To substitute one for the other is not feasible. Vitamins have an important role to play and there is a need to take them. However, vitamins do not have squalene's cellular protection, enhancement, activation, sterilizing and oxygen-supplying action.
  5. Q. Is squalene found only in sharks?
    A. As explained in Chapter V. Technical Information, squalene is found in certain types of animals and plants as well. However, they are present in them in very minimal quantities. The dogfish (deep-sea shark) is found to have the greatest amount of pure grade squalene in its liver. Olives, avocado, eggplant, chicken meat, parmesan cheese and tuna meat all have squalene at minute concentrations.
  6. Q. Is there such thing as having an “overdose” of squalene?
    A. It depends on what you mean by “overdose”. If you mean the type that results when one takes chemical drugs, then the answer is no. If by “overdose” you mean like overeating on a certain type of food, the answer is yes. Chemical drugs can have very serious side effects when overdose is experienced. To overeat on peanuts or tomatoes may cause some indigestion or loose bowel movement, but the harm is not comparable to overdosing on chemical drugs. Remember that squalene is a natural food supplement that is readily flushed out by the body in case of an overdose.
  7. Q. Since squalene is an oil, will it not cause one to be overweight?
    A. No. The amount of calories in one capsule (450 mg.) is minimal. Even if a person were to take 3 capsules daily, this would not be enough to cause someone to be overweight. Overweight would not be enough to cause someone to be overweight. Overweight is usually caused by overeating. Curbing food intake is the solution accompanied by exercise.
  8. Q. Isn't the shark an endangered species?
    A. No.
  9. Q. If squalene is the precursor to cholesterol, will regular intake increase my over-all cholesterol levels?
    A. Not necessarily. At the rate of 2 to 3 450 mg capsules per day the corresponding cholesterol conversion is minute. More important to understand is that there is some confusion about dietary cholesterol and blood cholesterol. Fact is cholesterol is a very broad term.
  10. Q. Just what is squalamine?
    A. Squalamine is not a protein. Instead, it is the first known example of class of compounds called aminosterols, each a steroid chemically linked to an amino acid. And while proteins make poor drugs, because they are easily destroyed by digestive enzymes in the stomach, squalamine remains unscathed through the digestive tract.
  11. Q. Has research been done on squalamine?
    A. Yes, squalamine is being investigated by Johns Hopkins School of Medicine researchers, Dr Henry Brem, Allen Sills, Mark Donowitz and their collaborators for its tumor destroying ability. Squalamine destroyed the tumor spreading ability in rabbits by surpressing the growth of new blood vessels needed to support the growth of tumors. Squalamine halted the growth of brain tumors in rats and prolonged the lives of the laboratory animals.
At the 1996 annual meeting of the American Association of Neurological surgeons in Minneapolis, Dr. Brem commented, “Our findings present evidence that squalamine may work against brain cancer.” Preliminary studies with certain brain cancer cells (glioma) have been encouraging, and the group plans clinical studies by the second half of 1998. Squalamine is also effective against many yeast, fungus and bacterial infections and especially offers promise to immuno-compromised persons such as AIDS and cancer patients.
  12. Q. Can squalamine be taken orally?
    A. Yes. While other experimental anti-angiogenesis drugs currently being tested have to be given IV, squalamine may be given as pills.
  13. Q. Are clinical trials being done on squalamine?
    A. Yes, I have copies of the most recent phase2 trial on non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC)- which was a big success.
  14. Q. Can squalamine be taken with shark liver cartilage?
    A. Yes, but we do not recommend it. Here is what Dr. Henry Brem, M.D., director of neurosurgical oncology at Hopkin's, and one of the leading researchers of shark liver cartilage has to say: “an inhibitor in the form of a protein, like shark cartilage, wouldn't make it through a patient's digestive system. The current available treatment couldn't possibly be a successful treatment. Squalamine, on the other hand, is a different story. It has proved to be non-toxic and a potent inhibitor of angiogenesis in animal models. It appears to be extraordinarily selective, halting only the growth of cells being stimulated by growth factors secreted by tumors. And, finally, it doesn't break down during digestion.” Hopkin's Medical News
